We are a firm believer in "Maslow before Bloom." In other words, we need to provide for our students' most basic needs according to Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs before we can expect them to reach high levels of academic success in the classroom as depicted by Benjamin Bloom's hierarchal educational taxonomy. Roughly 85% of the students at John Marshall High School are classified as low-income, with some experiencing high rates of poverty. If we want our students to perform at high levels in the classroom, we need to make sure their wellness needs are first being addressed. One way to impact this is to provide a laundry room for our students with washers, dryers, and laundry supplies (detergent, softener, etc.). Oftentimes our students come to school without clean clothing as they do not have the means to take care of this at home. By providing laundry services at school, students will be able to dress with confidence and not worry about how their peers will perceive them. Research shows that providing laundry services can create a decrease in school attendance issues and an increase in school pride, both which we would like to see improvements in at John Marshall High School. We are requesting two sets of washer/dryer combos (we will gladly accept used or new) and several large bottles of detergent and fabric softener.
Thank you for your consideration!
